''There are a lot more possibilities than you think''

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you joined Van
Lanschot Kempen through the Ability Program.

My name is Lucas, I’m 27 and originally from Haarlem. I studied American Studies in Groningen - a fascinating mix of history and politics - and after graduating, I spent two years traveling. I now live in Zandvoort with my girlfriend, Hannah. Joining Van Lanschot Kempen was a unique journey: in 2023, someone in my network told me about a sailing trip sponsored by Van Lanschot Kempen. I applied, joined the trip with 30 young people and colleagues on board, and had an unforgettable adventure! There, I met Rolf, our Ability Program Coordinator, and we talked about challenges and opportunities related to my Usher Syndrome, a progressive condition that causes hearing loss and narrowing of my visual field, and can eventually lead to deafblindnessThat trip sparked everything. A few months later, Rolf reached out, and I started at Van Lanschot Kempen in November 2024.

What motivated you to join Van
Lanschot Kempen, and what was your application experience like?

The sailing trip gave me a unique chance to experience Van Lanschot Kempen’s culture up close and meet the team in person. There was an instant connection, and the passion with which they spoke about their work truly inspired me. Instead of a traditional application process, Rolf invited me for an informal conversation and introduced me to departments such as Philanthropy, the VLK Foundation, and Associations & Foundations—areas where my background and interests could really make an impact. I felt well supported throughout: Rolf provided clear insights into the organization, and my girlfriend helped me prepare for the interviews. After several inspiring conversations with colleagues and two in-depth meetings with Rolf, I received exciting news: I could start!

How has your role evolved since you joined Van Lanschot Kempen, and what do you enjoy most about your work?

I started working across three different teams: spending one day a week at the VLK Foundation, one day at Philanthropy, and three days at Associations & Foundations. This gave me a broad view of the organization and taught me a lot, though it was sometimes challenging to master so many new systems at once. Since September 2025, I’ve been working full-time as a Relationship Manager for Associations & Foundations. What I enjoy most is contact with clients, usually board members who are committed to creating social impact. For example, foundations that fund scientific research or hospices that provide the best possible care. It’s inspiring to work with people who want to make a difference.

How does Van
Lanschot Kempen help you succeed at work?

The support here has been fantastic. My colleagues and manager are aware of my Usher Syndrome, and it’s an open topic. Small adjustments make a big difference: I often sit near a window to improve lip-reading, and I work two days from home to manage my energy. I also use a larger cursor on my screen because of my tunnel vision. These small changes help me perform at my best.

What advice would you give people with a disability who might want to join Van
Lanschot Kempen?

Don’t be afraid, there is so much more possible than you might think. I noticed that at Van Lanschot Kempen, the focus is on who you are and what you can achieve, not on obstacles. Use this to your advantage and don’t be afraid to name your talents. My practical tip: reach out to someone from the Ability Team, like Rolf, or someone from Talent Attraction. They are there to support you and help you find the right opportunities.

What are your aspirations within Van
Lanschot Kempen, and how has the Ability Program impacted your journey?

The Ability Program gave me a head start, helped me build a strong network, and opened doors I didn’t know existed. The program laid valuable groundwork for me to continue building on.

My goal now is to master my role as a relationship manager and organize impactful events for clients and prospects within Associations & FoundationsThis field truly resonates with me and gives me energy. I want to keep investing my passion here and continue to grow. At the same time, I remain open to exciting new challenges the future may bring.
