Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you found your way to Van Lanschot Kempen?
I’m Priscilla Versteegh, 39 years old, and I live in Hilversum. I enjoy hiking, weight training, and recently started roller-skating, which goes well with good weather. After working as a software tester for seven years, I was ready for a new challenge. Through a career event focused on inclusive hiring, I discovered Van Lanschot Kempen and learned about their Ability Program. That’s how I found my current role in the Data Management department in Den Bosch. It felt like a great opportunity to grow in a supportive environment.
What was your experience like during the application process and starting your new role?
The application process was warm and welcoming. I was nervous at first, but the team made me feel at ease and valued my experience. I started with a 32-hour work week to ease into the new rhythm, and with the support of my manager and colleagues, I’ve since increased to 36 hours. That flexibility really helped me adjust and feel confident in my role.
What do you enjoy the most about your work environment?
I test software updates for the Data Warehouse, which includes setting up test environments and comparing results. I also write SQL queries daily, which helps me understand the developers’ code better and motivates me to keep learning.
What I also really enjoy is the team I work with. There’s always someone sharing a funny story or talking about their weekend, which creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We celebrate our wins (sometimes with cake or worstenbroodjes), and that makes it feel like we’re achieving things together. I’m learning a lot from my colleagues, and that makes the work even more rewarding.
How has Van Lanschot Kempen supported your development?
The support has been fantastic. I recently completed an in-house SQL training, and I have regular check-ins with my manager, which really helps me stay on track and feel supported. The work culture is open, friendly, and respectful. People are approachable and genuinely interested in helping each other succeed. I’ve felt comfortable being myself here, and that has made a big difference in how I’ve grown professionally and personally.
What advice would you give to others with a disability considering a role here?
Be open about what you need to succeed. Van Lanschot Kempen is flexible and willing to support you. I’d also love to see the Ability Program become more visible online, maybe through LinkedIn or virtual meet-and-greets. That would make it easier for others to discover these opportunities in a low-stress way.
I would love to give the same support that I received here to future colleagues on the spectrum. I know how valuable it is to feel understood and supported, and I’d be happy to help others find their path the way I did.
