My name is Oryón. I am 40 years old, and I have been using a wheelchair for more than thirty years due to rheumatism. For as long as I can remember, investing has been part of my life. It started with my grandfather, continued with my father, and eventually became my own passion. For more than twenty years, I invested privately. After completing my VWO, I also followed banking courses focused on securities trading. Even then, I already knew: one day, I wanted to turn this experience into a professional career – ideally at a firm where long‑term investing and personal relationships with clients really matter.
A new start in Utrecht
A few years ago, I decided it was time for a change. I moved to Utrecht , a larger, busier city in the heart of the country, with more opportunities to start a career. I gave myself time to reflect and make plans. After settling in, I explored the city and my options and started thinking seriously about how to turn my passion for investing into a job.
About a month later, I followed my intuition. I took the train to Amsterdam Zuid, walked into the Van Lanschot Kempen office on Beethovenstraat, and handed in my open application letter at reception. For me, Van Lanschot Kempen was the number one company to join if I wanted to work professionally in the investment world because of its focus on high‑quality investment advice and long‑term relationships with clients.
From application to opportunity
My application eventually reached colleague Rolf Schrama, who is responsible for the Ability Program. After several good conversations, he pitched my profile internally. Two months after my visit to Beethovenstraat, I was invited for an interview with Peter, the manager of the Investment Advisory department.
Becoming a professional investor
The collaboration turned out to be a great match for both sides. I earned a permanent contract and became part of the Investment Advisory team. Together with my colleagues, I now provide investment advice to a sizeable group of clients.
The work gives me a lot of satisfaction. But what truly makes me proud is that I managed to make the transition from private investor to professional, and that I can fully participate alongside some of the best people in the industry.
Support and the Ability Program
I do not work full-time. Adjustments have been made to my workplace, and the support I received from Van Lanschot Kempen and the UWV has been crucial in making this journey a success. Before joining, I had never heard of the Ability Program. Another bank also had a program like this, but they ranked lower on my list. I trusted my intuition and acted proactively.
Change does not happen by itself, you have to take the steps yourself. As a person with a disability, that means more steps, more energy, and more perseverance. I was fortunate to meet the right people at the right moments. For me, the combination of the Ability Program, practical workplace adjustments and an inclusive mindset from my colleagues made it possible to contribute at a professional level.
Looking ahead
We have entered a new year, and when I look back at 2025, it feels almost unreal. I earned a permanent contract, fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Florida, and even obtained my driver’s license. I honestly do not know how 2026 could be better than that. But as some Floridians told me: “It’s all about the right mindset.” That mindset has brought me to where I am today, and I will continue doing my best to stay on this path. If you are considering a career in investing or wondering whether your own situation allows you to take that next step, my story shows that it is possible – with determination, the right support and an employer who believes in your potential.
I wish everyone success in achieving their goals and dreams, this year and for many years to come.
