Breaking stereotypes: Laure’s journey at Van Lanschot Kempen
Doubts and first impressions
If you’re unfamiliar with the financial industry, applying for a job in this sector can feel unsure because of certain stereotypes. This uncertainty I personally felt. I was drawn to Van Lanschot Kempen by its strong reputation, but coming from a scale-up background, I wondered: Would it feel too corporate for me? Would I feel at home in such an established Dutch company as an expat? Would the workplace be very hierarchical?
My start at Van Lanschot Kempen
Despite all these questions, I applied for a Recruiter position. During my interview, I was asked for my ideas on attracting more female talent to the finance sector. This conversation showed me that fresh perspectives are valued at Van Lanschot Kempen. The very next day, I received a call with an offer. And a few weeks later, my journey here began.
A culture of inclusion and diversity
From day one, I realised many of my assumptions were unfounded. I was impressed by how genuinely committed Van Lanschot Kempen is to diversity and inclusion. Not just as buzzwords, but as real values. The company deliberately attracts candidates with different backgrounds and experiences. I am especially inspired by the efforts to increase female representation, at every level, even the Management Board.
Recently, our CRO Damla Hendriks was among the top three nominees for the ‘Topvrouw van het jaar’ award. These kinds of role models matter. It is also great to see that the internal support we feel is recognised externally as well, such as our CEO Maarten Edixhoven’s inclusion in the 2025 Inclusive30 by MT/Sprout. This is highlighting our commitment to inclusion in business.
Flexibility and work-life balance
Van Lanschot Kempen also creates a flexible and supportive work environment. Regarding dress code and workplace formality, I quickly noticed there are no rigid rules. It depends on your role and responsibilities. Thanks to our hybrid workplace policy, you can work up to two months a year from abroad, if agreed with your manager. There’s even the possibility of taking a sabbatical, with part of your salary paid, which truly shows that work-life balance is valued here.
Ownership and innovation
What I really appreciate is how fast innovative ideas can be put into practice. After my first month, I was already managing projects to improve our processes. Coming from another company gave me a fresh perspective, and my manager encouraged me to quickly put ideas into action. We really own our projects here, with no endless layers of approval. I’ve already had the chance to work on initiatives such as employer branding and our referral program. That spirit of ownership and trust was exactly what I had hoped to find.
Room to grow
Internal mobility and professional growth are highly valued at Van Lanschot Kempen. I’ve met colleagues who have been with the company for years and are still enthusiastic about their work. They shared how they have developed, switched roles or departments, explored new paths, and grown professionally in ways I never anticipated.
A warm welcome
Looking back, I realise my initial doubts didn’t reflect reality. Van Lanschot Kempen offers a welcoming, personal, innovative, and entrepreneurial culture where employees truly thrive. Taking the step to join Van Lanschot Kempen has been one of my best decisions. Had I let stereotypes influence me, I would have missed a fantastic opportunity.
