If you're unfamiliar with the
corporate or financial world, you might hesitate to join companies in this
industry due to preconceived notions. I was once in your shoes.
When I applied to Van Lanschot
Kempen, I was drawn by the company's great reputation. Yet, I had to think.
Coming from a scale-up environment, I wondered: Isn't it too corporate for me?
Will I have to wear high heels every day? As an expat, will I fit into such an
established Dutch company? Will the
workplace be hindered by a rigid hierarchy.
I took the leap and joined Van
Lanschot Kempen as a Recruiter, in the HR team. I enjoyed having to think on
the spot about these scenarios I haven't encountered yet. For example, I was
asked to develop a strategy to hire more women in the Finance world. The next
day, I got a call from the recruiter, and she made me an offer. When I joined a
few weeks later, I was pleasantly surprised to find my stereotypes unfounded.
From day one, I was amazed. I discovered that Van Lanschot Kempen is deeply
committed to Diversity and Inclusion—not just as a buzzword, but as a core
value. The company actively reaches and targets people from different genders
and backgrounds. I am particularly inspired by Van Lanschot Kempen's commitment
to enhancing female representation within the company and the Management Board.
The recognition of our CEO, Maarten Edixhoven, in this year's Inclusive30 by
MT/Sprout, highlights our dedication to inclusion and diversity in business. Concerning the dress code, I don't have to
wear high heels as I work in the HR team, and I am not in contact with clients.
If I receive a candidate at the office, I should dress fancier. So you are free
to choose how you dress, depending on your role and the context.
I enjoyed my work from the start.
I met all the team members and stakeholders, many of whom have been with the
company for years and remain enthusiastic about their roles. They shared
stories of internal mobility opportunities, allowing them to explore different
roles or teams within the company.
Van Lanschot Kempen impressed me
with its modern approach. We have a hybrid work policy. We can work abroad for
2 months a year, and we have the possibility of
taking a sabbatical. I am planning to take a sabbatical in a few years,
and it is reassuring to know that part of my income will still be paid. This
demonstrates that work-life balance is valued here.
The culture allows innovative
ideas that are swiftly implemented. Indeed, after a month, I was already in
charge of several projects to improve our processes. Coming from another
company, I had a fresh eye and could spot what could be improved. My manager
really supported my ideas, and I could implement them quickly. We own our
projects and don't need to seek approval from multiple layers of management. Coming from a scale-up, I was seeking to find
an entrepreneurial spirit at Van Lanschot Kempen too. And I found it! I had the
opportunity to work on several projects already, such as employer branding or our
referral program.
Had I listened to my stereotypes
and not taken the chance, I would have missed out on a fantastic opportunity.
